Taking your dog on holiday with you is a wonderful experience. Not only do you not have to worry about organizing care for them whilst you are away, but you get to share all of your new and exciting adventures with your furry best friend.
Dogs bring incredible benefits to our mental health, and seeing the world with them makes for lifelong memories to be cherished.
But how easy is it to take your pet travelling, and where’s best to go? Here, we take a look at three of the best dog-friendly holiday destinations across the world.
Get your pooch ready to travel
Before you book your next getaway, be sure to have a valid passport for them. They’ll also need to have a rabies vaccination at least 21 days before you travel. Smaller dogs may be able to fly in the cabin on your lap or in the footwell, but larger dogs will need to travel in the cargo bay. Make sure your pet is comfortable with being placed in a crate and being separated from you for extended periods before attempting to fly them overseas, to avoid distressing them.
Italy Italy is a very dog-friendly country, where you’ll have no trouble finding cafes and restaurants happy for you to dine with your dog by your side. There’s plenty of outdoor seating so you can enjoy the weather, and dogs are commonly spotted exploring shops, markets and malls with their owners.
It’s also very simple to travel around this beautiful country with your pooch. Small dogs travel for free on all of the Trenitalia Trains, the main train network of Italy, and they’re welcome on all other forms of public transport. With a wide choice of pet-friendly villas and hotels, visiting Italy with your dog is a must for any sight-seeing family.
France There are a couple of extra things you’ll need if you want to take your dog to France, including an Animal Health Certificate which needs to be signed off by a veterinarian. No matter where you’re headed, be sure to always check with the latest travel and government offices to ensure you have all of the necessary paperwork to travel abroad with your pet. As a whole, France is a very welcoming country for our four-legged friends. There’s some stunning pet-friendly accommodation to be found, as well as plenty of amenities such as restaurants and beaches where you can enjoy the scenery and exquisite local cuisine with your dog in tow.
Switzerland
The majestic mountains, alpine forests and glorious hiking trails of Switzerland draw visitors from near and far, and they offer some of the best walks you could ever take with your dog. Again, the country is largely dog-friendly, with plenty of available accommodation and eateries happy to accommodate all species. Be sure to always follow the local rules whenever taking your dog out and about in this picturesque country, as many trails require dogs to be kept on leads to protect wildlife. For as little as 25 francs, you can purchase a ticket to travel on public transport with your pooch if you don’t fancy hiring a car.
Do your research
Wherever you plan to take your dog with you on holiday, be sure to always check the local rules and regulations first. With a little research and preparation, you can enjoy plenty of exciting adventures with your dog in these pet-friendly destinations.
